Professor King is the research leader of the Airway Physiology and Imaging Group at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and staff specialist in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital, where he directs the asthma service and is the Medical Director of the Respiratory Investigation Unit. He is Professor of the Northern Clinical School of the University of Sydney and Practitioner Fellow of the National Health and Medical Research Council. He currently supervises PhD and other postgraduate students of the University of Sydney. '
Professor King is a medical graduate of Otago University, New Zealand and his PhD was a study of airway physiology in asthma using SPECT imaging at the University of Sydney, Australia. He completed postdoctoral research fellowships at the University of Sydney and the Pulmonary Research Laboratory of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the American Physiological Society, Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and Asia Pacific Society of Respirology. He has served on committees of the ATS Structure and Function Assembly, National and NSW bodies of the TSANZ, and Grant Review Panels of the National Health & Medical Research Council and Health Research Council of NZ. He is currently the Chair of the Programming Committee of the Respiratory Structure and Function Assembly of the ATS. He is past President of the NSW Branch of the TSANZ.
His current research interests include the pathophysiology of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiolitis in haemopoietic stem cell transplantation, cystic fibrosis and airway hyperresponsiveness. He and his group have particular expertise in complex measurements using 3-dimensional lung imaging (including SPECT, CT and MRI), complex lung function tests (including forced oscillation technique and multiple breath nitrogen washout), and time-series analysis of variations in respiratory function.
