Dr Sameera Ansari

Respiratory Disease
Internationally-recognised COPD researcher with expertise in clinical trials for managing COPD in the context of multimorbidity

Dr Sameera Ansari is a qualified cardio-respiratory physiotherapist and clinical and translational researcher in COPD. Her doctoral research included development and testing of a global-first, self-management support program for COPD in the context of multimorbidity in Sydney general practices; this work was recognised by the European Respiratory Society, Asian Pacific Society of Respirology and World Health Organization and is being upscaled as a MRFF-sponsored, Australia-wide clinical trial of which she is Coordinating Investigator. She has authored scientific journal publications, commissioned research reports and policy documents, contributed to a respiratory clinical practice guideline, given conference presentations, seminars and media interviews and attracted peer-reviewed, competitive research funding including NHMRC, MRFF and industry-funded grants.

Dr Ansari works closely with consumers and clinicians, and has collaborated with a wide range of stakeholders from various country governments and health organisations including Lung Foundation Australia, GlaxoSmithKline, NSW Health, CareMonitor, AstraZeneca and the WHO. Sameera is a Senior Research Fellow at the UNSW School of Population Health, where she leads her own program of innovative research on COPD, including a MRFF-sponsored clinical trial to improve inhaler device technique and medication adherence in people with COPD and comorbidities in the community.

She is also Co-Lead of the UNSW Chronic Respiratory Disease Research Group, and a Honorary Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, Bond University.
