Dr Michael Murray holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons), a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and a D.Sc. from the University of Sydney. After postdoctoral research in Environmental Toxicology at Cornell University in New York, he returned to Westmead Hospital before appointment to the NHMRC Research Fellowship Scheme. He entered academia at UNSW and then relocated to the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Sydney. He is now an Honorary Affiliate at the Woolcock Institute and Honorary Professor at Macquarie University.

His research was funded continuously by the NHMRC and other agencies between 1987-2022 as major project and equipment grants. His research has focused on human enzymes and transporters that control the metabolism and disposition of drugs and foreign chemicals and contribute to clinical drug-drug interactions. The work has also identified biochemical and molecular mechanisms of human gene regulation in disease and has led to the development of new anticancer agents based on fatty acid metabolites. He also has interests in the mechanisms by which formulation modulates the interactions of pharmaceuticals with drug targets and cellular degradation pathways.

He has been a councillor for national and international scientific societies and was the ASCEPT visitor to the British Toxicology Society in 2002. He has served on numerous NHMRC grant committees, and has provided assessments for many international funding bodies. He has also provided reviews for more than 100 journals and served on eight editorial boards.
