Reducing the risk of a WINTER COLD
As much as we might try to avoid them, many of us
fall prey to colds in winter. It is not fully understood
why wintertime is associated with a marked increase
in colds (upper respiratory tract infections).
In colder
temperatures and with lower humidity, people are more
likely to be clustered together in spaces that are not
well ventilated and this is probably part of the reason.
Here are a
few tips to help reduce the risk of getting a cold:
- Stand clear of people who are coughing or sneezing as
droplets can spread several metres
- Keep your hands from frequently touching your face,
including nose and especially the eyes
- Avoid handling items that have been handled by someone
who obviously has a cold, has a tissue in their hand or is
with a child or baby who obviously has a cold
- Wash your hands with soap and water whenever you
handle anything that might be carrying viruses
