Tertiary Education and Training at the Woolcock Institute
Training Opportunities
Each year the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research supervises many students.
Students are able to utilise the Woolcock’s infrastructure: library, IT support, and administration and become part of its academic collegiate culture.
They work alongside their academic supervisors and have the opportunity to collaborate with other groups within the Woolcock. Where possible, many get to present their research results at national and international conferences.
Research at Sydney University and The Woolcock Institute of Medical Research In 2007 the University of Sydney was ranked 31 in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement, with more publications and more research funding than any other Australian university.
The University of Sydney’s researchers are international leaders in their fields. Their opinion is sought by governments, business and media. You could study with these leading researchers, joining a longstanding academic community. Many of the University’s researchers go on to exciting positions, both in Australia and overseas.

Training with the Woolcock's Sleep & Circadian Research Group
The Sleep & Circadian Research Group is just one of the groups at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research that offers training opportunities. This multidisciplinary research group investigates a wide range of areas related to sleep disorders and circadian rhythms. Members of the group have pioneered respiratory sleep medicine in Australia and assisted in the development of the original nasal CPAP system for sleep apnea.
The Woolcock Institute is funded by federal grants from the National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Australian Research Council (ARC), as well as other commercial and non-federal funding sources. The Woolcock Institute hosts the Centre for Clinical Research Excellence (CCRE) in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, to foster and promote education and training in clinical research in the areas of respiratory and sleep medicine. The Sleep and Circadian Group also forms an important component to the Australian Sleep Trials Network (ASTN).
Possible positions for students within the Sleep & Circadian Group include:
- Honours
- Vacation students/work experience
- Postdoctoral fellows
- PhD (graduate) students
- Masters students
- Physicians in training
In addition we also have positions for sleep technologists and research assistants.
