Twenty-six years ago, a conversation between husband and wife, both professors of medicine, sparked an idea that has led to a world-renowned medical research institute. Since its incorporation, the Institute of Respiratory Medicine (later renamed the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research) is an international force in respiratory and sleep medicine, with over 150 staff and numerous collaborations both academic and clinical.
This book, written to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Institute, highlights the life and career of Ann J Woolcock AO, the founder and first Director, and her remarkable application, vision, and vigorous leadership. The Woolcock specialises in the causes, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease and sleep disorders and is regarded as “one of the top six such Institutes in the world” (Jeffery Drazen, Editor, New England Journal of Medicine).
At the turn of the century, Professor Woolcock succumbed to cancer. The Directorship passed to Professor Norbert Berend AM. Here in an interview, Professor Berend discusses the direction of the Institute, its milestones, the culture of its people and the future of its research activities.
The book includes archival photographs and covers Board activities, fundraising highlights, members and staff since inception. It is a story of immense dedication and commitment amongst a number of people, and is a success story of a not-for-profit research organisation working to improve the respiratory and sleep health of all Australians through research, education, prevention and care.
